天美传媒

Chartered Institute
of Linguists

Translating Division

The main focus of the Committee's activities is member support and engagement through events. Nearly 80% of 天美传媒 members are translators and the opportunity to network and undertake relevant and timely CPD is a valuable benefit of 天美传媒 membership. TD events are also open to non-members; TD therefore plays a vital role in supporting the 天美传媒鈥檚 strategic aim to grow membership and to raise awareness of 天美传媒.

TD welcomes ideas and suggestions for topics from 天美传媒 members. Please contact the Committee through the link on the right if you have a suggestion.

Forthcoming events are currently being planned and will be publicised here soon.

TD runs a variety of professional development events, benefitting 天美传媒 members and non-members alike. Click an event to see its original listing and, if applicable, event reports and downloadable materials:

TD is the largest of the three specialist divisions and welcomes all 天美传媒 members who are practising or aspiring translators and those who have a professional interest in translation. Students interested in a career in translation and IoLET Affiliate members preparing for the Diploma in Translation are also welcome.

TD offers a variety of sector-specific events to help practitioners stay up-to-date plus events that cover subject areas based on relevance and on members' suggestions.

Take a look at the聽聽to see what kinds of events members would like TD to run, and therefore what the commitee will aim to organise.

Through TD, members can also contribute and benefit from the lively discussion on the TransNet forum in addition to drawing upon its useful repository of resources.

At all times TD works closely with 天美传媒's membership team and its other professional divisions, societies and networks, to support 天美传媒's strategic aims.聽

Furthermore, TD is committed to upholding 天美传媒's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy and other policies such as data protection and brand guidelines in the course of its activities.

The Division is run by an elected Steering Group made up of at least five but not more than seven Divisional members volunteers, who are all members of 天美传媒.

Election to the Steering Group is open to all Associates, Members and Fellows. Up to three new Steering Group members may be co-opted at a divisional meeting held in September once they have successfully completed the Online Eligibility Check Form. Co-opted members are appointed for an initial period of one year and at the end of their term of office, they may stand for election as full members of the Steering Group for one to two more years. Existing Steering Group members may be re-appointed up to a maximum term of six consecutive years before a three-year break is required. In addition, each year in September, the Steering Group will appoint a Coordinator and a Treasurer from the existing Steering Group members.

Ms Danielle Coleman

DipTrans MCIL CL

Steering group member (Co-opted)

Danielle took a degree in law at Oxford University in 1988 and worked in publishing for three years. She then moved to Greece, where she taught English from 1991 to 1993. Having returned to the UK and started a family, she decided that translation might be a flexible career that would combine well with looking after children, so she studied for the diploma in translation from French into English. In 1998 she was successful in the interinstitutional European Union competition for translators and was recruited as a translator first by European Court of Auditors and secondly by the European Parliament, where she worked as a translator for five years. During her time at the EU she added to her collection of languages by learning Spanish and Latvian.

In 2004 she decided to leave the EU and become a freelance translator, and she has worked as a specialist legal and EU affairs translator from French, Greek, Italian, Latvian and Spanish into her native English ever since.

Danielle joined the 天美传媒 in 2019 and gained Chartered Linguist status as a translator in 2022. She was very happy to be co-opted as a member of the Translating Division鈥檚 Steering Committee in October 2022 and looks forward to contributing to its work and fostering a sense of community among translators.

If you are interested in joining the Steering Group, we聽would be delighted to hear from you. Simply fill in our聽Online Eligibility Check form and a member of the Steering Group will contact you for a no obligation discussion.
